On the cusp of turning 50, and still rebounding from a dramatic and near-fatal tumble off a bridge, I embarked on a walk across Spain, heading towards the end of the earth - and hopefully, a body freed of chronic pain. After a delightful first week’s adventure with a mutt in tow and two donkeys hauling my belongings, all hopes of a peaceful promenade dissolved when a new schlepping companion gave me the cold shoulder. In the company of a revolving cast of pilgrims and animals, I grappled with a sitting disability, ditched my hiking boots in favor of sandals, crossed paths with quirky characters, and discovered a human species unique to the Camino, that I came to call The Stagers. I developed an obsession with wild blackberries, fended off snoring pilgrims and became haunted by the story of a father who walked in mourning over his murdered daughter. Desperate to distance myself from a dysfunctional tree- hugging pilgrim who had volunteered to carry my gear- but instead wreaked havoc on my serenity - I unexpectedly found myself wading through an interior landscape riddled with loose threads and long-buried secrets. But thanks to a German social worker who wove in and out of my weeks-long hike, providing comic relief and spiritual sustenance, I also found solace in solitude and faith in nature. (Un)bound Together: A Journey to the End of the Earth (and Beyond) is a testament to healing as a never-ending process along a path of unexpected hurdles and thrills.
